profiles

'Profiles' refers to looking at a persons face or outline from one side, and also to the recording of a person's personal details to describe their character or biography.  My profile subjects are some of the "born-free"* students I have taught (*youth born after the 1994 elections, when Apartheid ended). I juxtapose these with photos of feet from women and men who walk on the ground, the streets... an uncle, brother, grandfather or mother to the students? The contrasts and contradictions of these kinds of 'profiles' raise questions on the effects of an inherited history and the notion of  democracy, which has  been 'invested' in the education of the youth, set against the current educational protests that students are commanding under the #feesmust fall banner to decolonize curriculum and fee structures.
